Mountain Biking and Technical Ability

 Bruce Blackadders Words of Wisdom!

It should be recognised that mountain biking is not cycling but is form of madness where there is a belief that the law of gravity does not apply.

Technical ability is the understanding that this belief only applies to other people.

Observation is an important part of Technical ability.

For example, noticing that the rider in front has just gone A. over E. looking like a visit to A. and E. leads one to consider whether or not what they had just attempted was a good idea.

The Technical thing to do in this case is to get off and walk!

To retain "Trail Cred" it is important to fall off from time to time. This is an important skill. In suitable spots keep an eye out for soft looking patches of grass or moss to fall into, preferably on a slope so that there is only a short distance to fall and also because it looks more realistic to skid slightly on a slope.

Technical Ability in this case is checking that there are no nasty hard rocks or tree stumps hidden in the aforementioned grass or moss before attempting the fall.

Given the apparent hazards why go mountain biking instead of conventional road cycling?

One reason is to avoid the kind of motorist in a black hatchback who overtook me in Breadalbane St recently and immediately turned left into Victoria St forcing me into a sudden emergency diversion up Victoria St to avoid getting knocked off the bike.

Tip! Avoid doing this if you have a personalised number plate.

It makes you immediately recognisable.
